1. Physical Display & Color Rendering Realities

Hexadecimal values (such as #6366F1) are exact mathematical specifications, but how colors actually appear to the human eye depends on physical display hardware:

• Display Panel Type: OLED screens produce true blacks with infinite contrast, while IPS and TN LCD panels have varying backlight bleed and lower black levels.
• Color Gamut Calibration: Standard sRGB monitors display a smaller gamut than wide-color Display P3 screens found on modern Apple and high-end mobile devices.
• Operating System Modifiers: Ambient lighting sensors, night light/TrueTone shifts, and user-configured brightness levels subtly alter color perception.

2. WCAG Contrast Ratio Calculations

Our Contrast Guide and palette tools compute contrast ratios according to the official W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) relative luminance formula:

Contrast Ratio = (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05)

While this algorithm is mathematically exact, real-world legibility is also influenced by font weight (e.g., a hairline font at 4.5:1 ratio can still be difficult to read), optical font sizing, subpixel anti-aliasing, and background textures. We strongly encourage testing your interfaces with real users.
